What is Somatic Work?
Somatic work helps you gently notice your nervous system patterns as they happen — through awareness of sensations, movement, breath, imagery, and changes in energy or attention.
This Work May Be Supportive If You:
want to better understand how your nervous system pattern may influence how you experience daily life
want to identify and gently adjust your nervous system patterns of response
feel curious about working with your body rather than against it
prefer a gentle, body-based (“bottom-up”) approach
What is your nervous system pattern?
Your nervous system develops patterns over time in response to stress, sensory input, and lived experience. These patterns are not a sign that the body is broken — they are adaptive responses that may shape experiences such as overwhelm, fatigue, reactivity, and shifts in capacity.
Somatic work is not about forcing your nervous system into a specific state. Instead, it focuses on gently increasing awareness and supporting the body’s ability to move toward greater flexibility and capacity over time.
Many people notice patterns that resemble the following:
⚡ Overdrive
The nervous system is highly activated and alert. This may feel like urgency, restlessness, difficulty slowing down or settling, feeling wired, or heightened sensitivity to stress or stimulation.
🪫 Conserving
The nervous system shifts toward conserving energy. This may feel like fatigue, low energy, difficulty starting tasks, endless scrolling, or needing more rest and quiet.
⚡🪫 Overdrive–Conserve
The nervous system moves between high activation and low energy states. Some people notice cycles of pushing followed by needing extended recovery. Some people feel both wired and tired and find it difficult to settle into a steady pace.
⚖️ Managing
The nervous system is functioning with some steadiness by carefully managing energy, stimulation, and demands. There may be a sense of “holding things together” through planning and pacing in order to stay functional.
🌿 Resourced
The nervous system has greater access to steadiness, recovery, and flexibility when responding to daily demands.
If you recognized yourself in any of these patterns, you’re not alone. Many people find it helpful to explore how their nervous system responds and what may support greater steadiness and capacity over time.
